Official Survey Findings

Right now I work at an academic and non-profit survey research center. So here is a survey that I took, from Food Snobbery is My Hobbery, a great vegan blog. I like surveys. Except for when I have to work on them. Now you know weird things about me. I guess I am not following respondent privacy protocol. And I’m publishing my results…do I have to apply to the Human Subjects Committee? If you don’t work in survey research, all of those references were wasted on you.You can take the survey and post it on your blog!

1. If you have to choose between locally grown or organic, which do you usually choose?
Local

2. Favorite way to prepare potatoes:
Hash browns! With pepper, smoked salt and ketchup

3. Do you press your tofu before preparing/cooking it (if you eat soy)?
Every time

4. Name your favorite recipe that is a tradition in your family:
Um, do pop tarts count?

5. Any food allergies? I think I might be allergic to wheat beer. Sad face

6. When you want to go to a fancy dinner, where do you go?
Well, the place we spend the most money is at Jit’s Thai CafĂ© in Bloomington. If I could magically transport, I would go to Blossoming Lotus in Kapaa, Kauai

7. When you have a cold, what do you crave?
Anything spicy so that I can taste it

8. What kind of water do you drink? (Filtered, spring, tap, etc.)
straight from the tap

9. Name a flavor of soda you’d love to see:
Raspberry banana!

10. If the recipes you ate as a child were compiled into a cookbook, what would the title be?
Let’s Cook Something in the Microwave

11. If you were allowed to grow one food that can’t grow in your climate, what would it be?
Avocado

12. Favorite type of mushroom?
Morel

13. Most frustrating part of your kitchen?
too small….and getting smaller

14. Last food you burned?
brown rice in a rice cooker-seems like a no brainer…

15. Usual response to a veg*n’s favorite question, “But where do you get your protein?”:
” I am a tofu robot.”

16. If you were baking your own birthday cake today, what flavor would it be?

18. You have $200 of your tax return reserved for Williams Sonoma- What do you buy?
expensive Balsamic vinegar and a Wusthoff knife

19. Do you plan your menus in advance? Any tips to share?
I try to plan-I figure out what we have left, what sounds good, and maybe 2-3 common ingredients that will work for 3 different dishes

20. You have 3 minutes before you have to leave the house and you’re starving- What do you eat?
A vitamin and some water. Lame, but I’ll eat later.

21. If Martha Stewart, Paula Deen, and Rachel Ray got into a fight, who would win and how?
Martha Stewart. But not because I’d want her to. She’d win with some freaky jail moves she learned in prison and a garden spade. I’d rather they all beat each other into oblivion. I hate that stupid “scrap/garbage bowl” that Rachel Ray is trying to sell for $20. Gimme a break. Put your veggie peelings in a bowl you have and then the compost!

22. If you eat oatmeal, what do you add to it before serving?
Maple syrup, vegan butter, maybe some nuts or LOTS of brown sugar

23. If you got to travel to one country and learn all the traditional dishes there, where would you go (ignore commitments in your current place of residence)?
Thailand (minus the fish sauce)

24. Favorite late night snack?
Chips and salsa with vegan sour cream

25. Favorite springtime food?
greens!

26. Favorite food-related magazine?
Herbivore

27. Which do you prefer: shoyu, tamari, conventional soy sauce, or Bragg’s Aminos?
Tamari

28. What vegetable or fruit do you dislike the most?
I like them all. But I am not a fan of the herb rosemary.

29. Name a holiday food you look forward to all year long:
My dad’s sweet potatoes and cranberry salad

30. If you could convert anyone to veganism with your magic wand, who would you convert?
My husband and then the next president, whomever it may be (OOOOOOOOOO-BAMA! )
